Every woman needs a jumpsuit

Viv Groskop wearing a jumpsuit

Viv Groskop wearing a jumpsuit. Photograph: Graeme Robertson/Graeme Robertson

I usually avoid trends which might make me look like a fashion victim. But when I discovered that the jumpsuit is this season’s garment of the moment, I had to have one. I have wanted a jumpsuit since Bananarama’s 1983 Cruel Summer video. I was 10 at the time and not allowed one. Now, at 35 and (critically) recently slimmer by three stone, I feel my time has come.

The weight loss is a factor. When you’re pushing size 18, no one wants to see you in a jumpsuit. I’m not sure they do at size 12/14 (which I am now) either. In fact I’m sure I don’t conform to what Alexander McQueen was dreaming of when he designed a strapless all-in-one for this season. But to hell with the taste police. My jumpsuit is a celebration. It spreads joy.

Finding the right one was not easy, though. I have tried on every style on the high street: Joseph (too babygrow), Principles (too brown), Jasper Conran at Debenhams (too obscene), Ghost (too Margo from the Good Life), Reiss (gorgeous, but waist in wrong place). And then I eventually found exactly what I wanted – a denim-effect boiler suit for ??45 – online at asos.com, where they have 60 (yes, 60) jumpsuits.

The look has received a mixed reception at home. “Funny trousers,” frowned my five-year-old son. The two-year-old, a girl, was easier to brainwash: “I want one! Jumpsuits are cool.”

They are also, I am finding, the ultimate lazy wardrobe solution – a dress and trousers in one. I have a second, more sedate, jumpsuit for evening in black jersey for ??29.50 (a close relative of the Halston wrap-top jumpsuit, ??1,110 on net-a-porter.com), also found on asos.com, and I do not rule out buying a third.

The jumpsuit was once cited as the fashion solution for the future. Ginger Rogers wore one in the 1937 film Stage Door and Courrèges designed a space jumpsuit in the 1960s. Last year the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona hosted a tribute to the jumpsuit, entitled One for All and All for One, an exhibition of “space, flight and workwear”.

This is what I like most about the jumpsuit: it makes you feel ready for action – be it jumping out of an aeroplane, auditioning for Dexys Midnight Runners or undertaking some impromptu car repairs a la KwikFit fitter.

Can any woman really wear one? Of course. It matters not whether you can wear a jumpsuit – simply that you must.

Complete Guide to Wearing Black Stockings

May 25th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Black stockings are a really versatile clothing item that every woman’s closet can benefit from. These stockings come in many different materials and styles. They can be functional in keeping out the cold or designed to add sexy style to an outfit. Black stockings can be an accessory that enhances your total look or the basic piece that you build an outfit around. They can even be worn under other stockings to change their effect.

Material for Black Stockings

There are different types of material that black stockings may be made from. The choice of your material is going to change the choice of the mood created by the black stockings. Some of the most common materials chosen for black stockings are:

?? Nylon. The most common material for black stockings is nylon. These stockings are often sheer although some may be more opaque than others. These stockings can be used for professional attire as well as for going out on the town. Some have patterns sewn into them to create a more interesting look. Most nylon stockings have spandex in them for stretchiness; the amount of spandex used can change the appearance of these stockings.

?? Cotton. Black stockings that are primarily made from cotton are opaque and comfortable. They are designed to be worn almost like leggings, beneath a large T-shirt or a skirt. Jersey is a similar material sometimes used for these stockings.

?? Fishnet. Black fishnet stockings are designed to be sexy. They may have big holes or small ones or they may be patterned to create a design but they are definitely meant to exude sexiness.

?? Silk. It is rare to find silk stockings but they did exist a long time ago so vintage clothing shoppers may look for these.

Styles for Black Stockings

The style or cut of black stockings can definitely change the way they affect the outfit that you are wearing. Many types of black stockings are designed to be sexy. Thigh-high stockings are a great example of this. Others are designed to help shape your body so that you look slimmer or more toned. Still others may be designed for comfort. Choose the cut to match the mood that you’re in when you want to wear the stockings.

Different Ways to Wear Black Stockings

The way that you choose to wear black stockings changes the effect of your outfit. Here are some of the different ways that women often wear black stockings:

?? As pantyhose. Black stockings worn as pantyhose with professional attire can make you look a little bit sexier during your workday without making you too sexy for the office. Likewise the stockings can be worn this way with a fancy dress to make it more stylish.

?? As leggings. Thicker black stockings can be worn in a way similar to leggings. It is common to see them worn underneath a jean skirt these days.

?? Worn for warmth. People who live in colder climates may add black stockings as a staple to their closets. In this case, they’re worn with all different skirts, dresses and shorts in a layered look.

?? As a textured look. Black stockings can be worn underneath lighter colored stockings or colored fishnet stockings to create an interesting textured look for your legs. This is the type of look seen on artsy indie girls.

?? To add drama. An all-black outfit is a lot more dramatic if you don’t see pasty legs as part of it. Black stockings can help with that.

?? As part of a costume. Many different costumes for events may be worn with black stockings to complete the look or to offer some warmth to a skimpier costume.

?? For sex appeal. Fishnet stockings are particularly worn this way under short skirts and dresses. Backseam black stockings are another sexy choice; these are the sheer stockings with a seam line running up the back of the leg.

Tips for Wearing Black Stockings

Figuring out the look that you’re going to want to create will help you to choose the right stockings. Here are some additional tips for wearing them with style:

?? Think carefully about your shoes. High heels and boots are great choices with stockings. Open-toed shoes are often a mistake.

?? Note that sheer stockings are going to make legs look thinner whereas thicker, patterned stockings might create a look that’s too bulky for you.

?? Pay attention to where your skirt or dress ends. If it hangs too low then stockings might throw off your proportions and make you look a little strange.

?? Play around with your style. You’ll figure out what looks right.

Black Stockings in Popular Culture

Black stockings can be a part of any different type of look. However, when black stockings are discussed in popular culture, they are almost always discussed for their sex appeal. Google the phrase “black stockings” and you’ll find that a lot of adult websites come up. You’ll also find references to a few film noir movies including The Girl in the Black Stockings; this is a racy film genre.

Where to Buy Black Stockings

Black stockings are such a common item that you can purchase them almost anywhere. Top places to purchase black stockings include:

?? Department stores. The hosiery department of your favorite department store is a great place to look for a wide variety of different types of black stockings. It is particularly easy to find pantyhose-style black stockings here including the types of stockings that are designed to be shape-improving.

?? Lingerie stores. People who are specifically seeking a sexier version of black stockings are probably going to find that there are better choices (particularly in terms of styles) at lingerie stores. Victoria’s Secret is a popular place to start when looking for items like this.

?? Costume stores or adult novelty stores. People who are interested in getting black stockings for a costume event or for adult purposes may find that these stores offer a better selection of those types of black stockings than do other types of stores.

Black stockings go with almost everything so this is definitely an item that should be in your closet!

Frankie Morello chases the blues away

May 24th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Moda di Milano—Milan Fashion Week to the Anglophones—cements itself as the centre of creativity in the fashion world, as Frankie Morello blows away any recessionary blues with his autumn–winter 2009–10 collection

photographed by Thomaz

WHILE Lucire has typically covered New York and London fashion weeks in more depth, Milano has been a different kettle of fish, usually dependent on contacts and budgets.

Thomaz, one of the very talented photographers we have come into contact with over the years, has been attending the collections, shooting, for starters, Frankie Morello’s autumn–winter 2009–10 collection.

Italy has not been as exposed to the global financial crisis as most nations—one commentator noted how it had fewer Starbucks and was, therefore, less affected by globalized problems—and Morello certainly designed as though there were no concerns on the monetary markets.

After all, history has shown that no matter how hard times get, there’ll always be people who want to look great and are willing to fork out for the latest collections. It came as Roberto Cavalli cancelled his presentation and Armani went jittery over retail sales—but it’s times like this when less known designers can capitalize on their flatter management structures and forge ahead.

Morello went for origami and geometry in his autumn–winter vision, and his three-dimensional cones and gathering made for a startling, welcome collection

Kate Moss Goes Tribal For Topshop

May 23rd, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

imageTopshop is revealing looks from Kate Moss’ high summer collection in a slow trickle. Drapers has a total of eight images from
the line, which hit stores today, and the looks are heavy on tribal
prints and exceedingly short hemlines. According to Drapers, the
“exotic Moroccan and Native American Indian inspired styles … tip a
nod to the model’s own summer holiday styles.” In other words: fringe
is big—fashioned in a peek-a-boo vest and as detail on a simple tank.
Geometric, tribal-inspired prints are likewise a focus of the
collection, which is Kate Moss’ tenth for the High Street retailer. And
at least as far as the styling for the lookbook is concerned, feathers
are this summer’s must-have accoutrement.

As
Drapers points out, “the ditsy floral prints which were a theme of
Moss’ previous collections have been replaced.” Put simply, she’s
traded in vegetation for the animal prints and tribal references. With
prices ranging from ??22 to ??75, one thing is recycled from last season:
an affordable price point.

Celebity Style Smackdown. Who Wore It Best?

May 22nd, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Leven_rambin

Levin Rambin vs. Dita Von Teese in Moschino Cheap and Chic

Winner: Dita Von Teese. This is a bit of a no-brainer. It takes a lot to make the retro chanteuse look bad but her overall look complements the ruffly, Moschino frock much more than Rambin’s, from her coiffed curls to the white, open-toed heels. Rambin gets points for being a risk taker with the black vest and pointy-toes but the end result of her wannabe rocker look misses the mark.

Kate_walsh300
Kate Walsh vs. Perrey Reeves in Dior

Winner: Perrey Reeves. We have to hand the honor to Reeves who perfects the streamlined, lady-like vibe of the dress with her tousled locks, the chain-strap back and the strappy sandals. She looks polished and effortlessly chic. Walsh looks a bit too severe with her hair tightly pulled back and the clunky shoes are just all wrong.

Reese_witherspoon300
Reese Witherspoon vs. Jessica Biel in Simply Vera by Vera Wang

Winner: Reese Witherspoon. It takes equal parts keen fashion sense and plain old common sense to take a $129 coat and turn it into a million bucks. Witherspoon does just that by pairing the coat with a simple Versace dress and classic nude heels. Biel is not quite in the same league with her choices of opaque tights, tan riding boots, and unwashed hair. She could have done a lot more to make this daytime look more polished and less drab, even with something as simple as incorporating another color with a chic scarf. As it stands though, she’s resigned herself to being much more garage sale than glamour.

Kim_kardashian
Kim Kardashian vs. Brittany Snow in Lela Rose

Winner: Kim Kardashian. Although both women look lovely in their ethereal dresses and loose waves, the tie has to be broken due to the shoes. This proves shoes really can make or break an entire look. Kardashian’s rose colored dress complements her olive skin ton nicely and the nude shoes only elongate her legs. Snow also chose the right berry color for her skin and hair but drops out of the race with her oddly striped, black shoes. When in doubt-you can never fail with subdued metallic on a dress like this.

Anne_hathaway300
Anne Hathaway vs. Kate Bosworth in Burberry

Winner: Anne Hathaway. Sorry Kate, but Anne does a better job of pulling off this laidback look, perhaps from channeling her ‘Get Smart’ character. Trench, dark glasses, skinny jeans and flats are a universal on-the-go ‘go to’ and there’s a reason why: because they look better than a trench with awkward, granny-length skirts and ankle booties. You want the coat to accent your outfit, not serve as a means to cover it up. At least she got the memo on the shades.

Ellen Pompeo: Ice Blended Baby Bump

Ellen Pompeo: Ice Blended Baby Bump

Pregnant actress Ellen Pompeo picks up an ice-blended coffee from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and goes shopping at the Calypso boutique on Monday (May 18) in Los Angeles.

The day before, the 39-year-old actress was seen taking a hike at Griffith Park with her assistant and her dogs.

Ellen’s Grey’s Anatomy costar Katherine Heigl recently re-entered the race to content for an Emmy Award.

Last year, Heigl had her name withdrawn from the ballot. “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention,” she had said. “In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.”
